Frequently Asked Questions

What does RASA offer my child that public schools do not?

The focus of education at RASA is development of the global citizen. Our faculty is dedicated to prepare a future generation of highly educated leaders who will seek to create an environment of equality and respect for all. RASA’s ideals are closely aligned with those of the respected International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and RASA is the only school in Southern Minnesota offering an IB-PYP based curriculum. At RASA, small class sizes allow individualized attention and the opportunity for a child to learn at his or her own pace. In preparation for a future of global citizenship all students at RASA study Spanish daily.

Does RASA have a particular religious ethos?

No. RASA is a nonsectarian school. There is however a deliberate focus on character development. RASA aims to develop principled, open-minded and caring young people to help create a better and more peaceful world. These ideals are at the core of the IB Learner Profile.

Why does the RASA calendar differ from that of the public schools?

There are no federal or state mandated minimum number of school days, with the average school year in the US being 180 days. At RASA the academic school year at 186 full days, is longer than the public (166 full days, 8 half days) or most private schools in Rochester (171-175 days). The RASA calendar has five terms each based around an International Baccalaureate unit of inquiry.

Why is the school day longer at RASA?

The curriculum at RASA is broader than that of many schools in Rochester with emphasis on language, math, arts and  sciences developement while incorporating Spanish and physical education instruction into the

daily schedule. To accommodate this, the school day is longer than that of other Rochester schools (8.00 am to 3.25 pm). Homework is kept to a minimum in the lower grades, as there is ample time within the school day to learn.

Does RASA close on 'snow days'?

The school policy is not to close for inclement weather, but run with usual start and closing times. However, due to diminished staffing on days when the Rochester Public Schools are closed, the day may run on a modified schedule of classes, if necessary with combined groups. Parents may choose not to send their children to school on these days, or pick up early. Students who normally utilize after-school care, should be picked up as promptly as possible at the end of the school day. If parents know they are going to be delayed they should contact the school office.

How physically active are RASA students?

At RASA we value the importance of regular exercise, hence physical activity is factored into the daily schedule.  All students participate in active play time for at least 45 minutes daily. Students are able to participate in athletics in the multi-purpose room if the outside temperature is too cold.

Does RASA have a computer lab?

RASA has acomputer laboratory. RASA also uses iPADs. This allows, under careful supervision, computer use to be an integral part of the RASA curriculum.

Does RASA provide transportation for my child?

Transportation to school is provided by each child's family. Transportation for field trips is arranged by the school.

Does RASA provide after school care for students?

School doors open at 7.30 am to allow children to be brought to school prior to the work day. After school care is also provided for a small additional fee until 6:00 pm.
